Johaira Andang Santamina, often called “Jo” in the MCI family, is a 21-year-old young woman whose life reflects resilience. Born on October 2, 2004, in Katuli, Sultan Kudarat, Mindanao, she is the fifth child among ten siblings in a devoted Muslim family. Growing up in a large household shaped her sense of responsibility at an early age, teaching her the value of sacrifice, patience, and service to others. From a young age, Johaira learned that strength is not always loud but is often found in perseverance and compassion. Before entering the Minority Care International (MCI) program, Johaira’s daily life revolved around family responsibilities. She took a role in caring for her younger siblings while also assisting her parents in managing their karenderya. These experiences instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for hard work. Within her family, she became a role model, particularly to her younger sisters, proving through her actions that dedication and humility can lead to growth and hope. Johaira has been an MCI scholar for almost three years and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Management Accounting. As the great hope of her family, she carries her academic responsibilities with determination. Despite moments of self-doubt and fear of failure, she continues to persevere, anchored by her strong faith in God. Johaira believes that every situation has a purpose and that God places people in challenging circumstances to prepare them for greater roles in life.
When Johaira first entered MCI, she described herself as timid, uncertain and lacking confidence in her own abilities. However, through the guidance, encouragement, and values instilled by MCI, she underwent a remarkable transformation. MCI became a place where she discovered her voice, embraced her gifts, and learned to use them for the good of others. Under the leadership of Dr. Aland Mizell, President of MCI, Johaira internalized the principle that “challenges are a part of life, but facing and solving those challenges is an art of life.” This belief now guides her decisions both academically and personally. During her time in MCI, Johaira actively participated in various activities, including fundraising activities where she assisted in sales and coordination. She was also trained in practical business and life skills through her experience as a cashier at the Turkish Coffee House, one of MCI’s training grounds for scholars. Through this experience, she learned financial management, budgeting, communication skills, teamwork, and problem-solving skills that are essential for her future profession and daily life. MCI not only educated her academically but also equipped her with practical competencies that strengthened her independence and confidence.
Johaira’s character is defined by her generosity and concern for others. Even in moments when she herself has little, she continues to lend help, guidance, and encouragement to those around her. She has a natural inclination toward teaching and often assists her peers when they struggle academically. Her co-scholars describe her as thoughtful, wise, and someone who always has meaningful insights to share during discussions. Despite differences in beliefs and backgrounds, Johaira treats everyone as family, embodying the inclusivity and mutual respect that MCI promotes. As a middle child, Johaira naturally assumed the role of mediator within her family. She became a problem-solver and peacemaker, courageously addressing misunderstandings among her siblings and fostering open communication. Through her experiences in MCI, she learned the importance of being present for others, especially during moments when people feel isolated or misunderstood. She carries this lesson into her family life, ensuring that her siblings feel supported, heard, and valued. Today, Johaira dreams of becoming a public accountant and, by God’s grace, hopes to pursue law and become an attorney in the future. Her journey is a testament to how guidance, faith, and opportunity can shape a young woman into a leader with wisdom and compassion. MCI has played a vital role in her moral, academic, and personal development, and Johaira remains deeply grateful to be part of a program that nurtured her growth and strengthened her purpose. Johaira’s life story is one of transformation. From a timid young woman burdened by self-doubt, she has grown into a confident scholar, a dependable sister, and an inspiration to those around her. Through the teachings of MCI and the values instilled by its leadership, Johaira continues to walk forward with faith, strength, and a commitment to uplifting others as she pursues her dreams.
